Low carbohydrate intake during pregnancy increases risk of birth defects

Compared with women who do not restrict their carbohydrate intake, women with low carbohydrate intake during pregnancy are at a 30% increased risk of having babies with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, according to a new study reported January 25, 2018 in the journal Birth Defects Research.
